2021’s Biggest Landscape Trends
While 2021 might not have been the return to “normal” that we had hoped for, it gave many of us the time to re-evaluate our at-home spaces with this new way of living in mind. Spending time outside continued to be the safest way to see friends and family and creating outdoor spaces that are part of our home was a common desire.
While we enjoyed designing all of our projects this year, here are some of our favorite trends from 2021:
Outdoor Living Rooms
Everyone’s must-have list included a seamless transition from inside to outside the home. As the weather got nicer, get togethers started to move outdoors. Furniture that was both comfortable and weather friendly was a must with weatherproof daybeds going on backorder almost as soon as spring had sprung. Plus, who doesn’t love a space you can just clean up with a hose!
The Colors Gray and Yellow
Pantone picked two colors of the year for 2021 - Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow – a marriage of colors conveying strength and hope. This color combination was a hit both indoors and out with pops of yellow complementing gray furniture, happy yellow flowers planted against a gray stone wall and patio containers overflowing with yellow pansies.
Shade
Spending so much time outdoors, people were constantly looking for unique options to provide shade on those hot summer days. Pavilions and pergolas became popular backyard additions with new metal versions that included both shade and screen protection from pests. Covered spaces also allowed for outdoor living even in inclement weather and gave many an additional spot to work.
Social Front Yard Spaces
Many found themselves spending more time with neighbors and wanted added space for easy entertaining. Front porches started to get more attention with Adirondack chairs or bistro sets. Some people even added new hardscapes with a fire feature! These new additions allowed for more fun times outside.
Privacy Hedges
Curb appeal in the front, privacy in the back! While many people love connecting with their communities, you still need a space just for you. We often used hedges to provide a beautiful privacy solution. Plants are less intrusive than traditional fences and make your yard feel like a tropical oasis.
Native Plantings
Also known as rewilding, adding native species to your space became a trend in 2020 and only got bigger over the last year. Native plants are easier to maintain and attract birds and pollinators to your space. Americans continue to change the way they garden to benefit local wildlife.
Growing Food
All this time at home has reminded many of us how nice it is to enjoy a meal from your own backyard. Patio garden containers sold out quickly and many found spots for a raised garden bed. Community gardens also became popular in urban environments. Nurseries brought new varieties of vegetables and herbs to the masses and we enjoyed them all!
As we say goodbye to 2021, we would like to thank each and everyone one of you! We love what we do and we wouldn’t be here without your continued support. Cheers to a happier and healthier 2022!
